Like a bolt out of the blue



美國的成語和俗語五彩繽紛。其中有一些是和紅顏色有關(guān)，如：red letter day 和 red tape。有的和綠顏色有關(guān)。如：green thumb 和 green light。不管是紅或是綠，它們都含有特殊的意思。



今天我們要講兩個(gè)和藍(lán)顏色，也就是英語里的 blue 這個(gè)字有關(guān)的成語。在日常生活中，blue是一個(gè)非常口語的詞匯，美國人經(jīng)常使用。它的意思就是情緒很低。正因?yàn)槿绱?，blues 這個(gè)字就成了爵士音樂里面的一種。稱謂 blues 的這種爵士音樂，它的特點(diǎn)是節(jié)奏慢，曲調(diào)很低沉。



在日常會話中，要是你對一個(gè)朋友說: "I really have the blues today." 這就是說，你今天因?yàn)槟撤N原因情緒很不好。



現(xiàn)在，我們先來講一個(gè)和 blue 有關(guān)的俗語：singing the blues。Singing 的原動詞是sing，就是唱歌、唱戲的唱。Singing the blues 的意思就是訴苦、抱怨。請聽下面這個(gè)例子：



例句-1: "Every time I ask Joe to pay back the money he borrowed from me, he sings the blues about all the things at home he needs money for."

這人說："每當(dāng)我要喬還他借我的錢的時(shí)候，他總是訴苦，說他家里有多少開支。"

下面我們要介紹的另一個(gè)俗語是 like a bolt out of the blue。Bolt 是閃電，blue 在這兒是指藍(lán)色的天空。 Like a bolt out of the blue 的意思就是晴天霹靂，也就是出乎意外、沒料想到。有時(shí)，你花幾個(gè)小時(shí)也解不開一道數(shù)學(xué)題?？墒?，當(dāng)你不再去想它的時(shí)候，你腦子里突然出現(xiàn)了答案。人們還經(jīng)常用 like a bolt out of the blue 來形容車禍。請聽下面這句句子：



例句-3: "A driver may testify that he was going the normal speed limit when a truck appeared in front of him out of the blue and he did not have time to stop."

這句話的意思是："一個(gè)開車的人可能會在作證時(shí)說，正當(dāng)他以正常的速度行駛的時(shí)候，一輛卡車突然出現(xiàn)在他面前，他來不及剎車。"

例句-4: "The announcement that the president of our university was quitting to go to another school hit us like a bolt out of the blue. He's always said he liked it here so much he would stay until he retired."
