黃鶴樓坐落在武漢市武昌區(qū)蛇山之巔。原址據(jù)說在長江邊，歷史上曾經(jīng)屢毀屢建。

黃鶴樓的主體建筑有5層，共高51米。黃瓦紅柱，鉆尖頂，層層飛檐勾心斗角，四面如一，樓形正方缺隅，屋頂安置著一座金色的“寶頂”。樓頂全部用黃色的琉璃瓦鋪蓋，不僅順應(yīng)了“橘皮黃鶴”的故事，也與藍(lán)天相輝映，燦爛輝煌，別具一格。翹下有風(fēng)鈴和翹角梁飾，每個角都有向上凌空飛騰之勢。翹角處上有屋“魚尾”，下有角梁“龍頭”，造型生動多姿。四面角梁的前端分別懸掛著“黃鶴樓”“南維高拱”“北斗平臨”和“楚天極目”四塊鎦金大匾。

主樓臺基用花崗石貼面鋪地。潔白的花式欄桿環(huán)繞著臺座，臺前銅制的“黃鶴歸來”造型精致，栩栩如生。整個黃鶴樓古樸秀麗。

樓內(nèi)的裝飾古色古香。除設(shè)藻井、天花、彩畫、花罩等傳統(tǒng)裝飾外，大廳墻面上還鐫刻著以黃鶴樓的神話傳說、歷史故事、人文活動、興廢沿革、楚天風(fēng)光為題材的大型壁畫，樓內(nèi)紅柱上還懸掛著古往今來名流撰寫的楹聯(lián)。

從正門進(jìn)入首層大廳。大廳中央高10米，四周設(shè)跑馬廊。正廳前方是巨幅立式構(gòu)圖的陶瓷壁畫，題名“白云黃鶴樓”，內(nèi)容取材于駕鶴登仙的古代神話，兼取唐詩“昔人已乘黃鶴去”之意，畫面正方一位仙者駕著黃鶴騰空而起，他口吹玉笛，俯視人間，似有戀戀不舍之情。黃鶴下方聳立著清代黃鶴樓的形象，高樓下，人群欲動，大有祝愿仙人、黃鶴早返人世之意，形成天上、人間互相呼應(yīng)的動人場面。四周白云繚繞，背后江水滔滔。這是一幅寓意深長的佳作。大廳正中柱子上，掛著一副7米長的名聯(lián)：爽氣西來，云霧掃開天地撼；大江東去，波濤洗盡古今愁。

Surrounded by white clouds, behind the surging river. This is a masterpiece with deep meaning. In the center of the hall, there is a 7-meter-long couplet hanging on the pillar: cool air comes from the west, clouds sweep away the sky and the earth; the east of the river, waves wash away the ancient and modern worries.

走上跑馬廊，在夾層中設(shè)有兩個陳列室，展出歷代有關(guān)黃鶴樓的文獻(xiàn)資料、詩詞歌賦的影印本以及各種黃鶴樓圖的復(fù)制件，從文化史料的角度反映出黃鶴樓的歷史概貌。
