　　Caroline: I can’t remember, sir. The man whom I served was wearing a hat.

　　本課帶有定語從句的復合句還有:The books which are on the counter; He says he's the man who bought these books: The man who I served was wearing a hat; Is this the man that you served等,其中which, who,whom, that均為關系代詞。

　　這是另一個定語從句的例子。由于被修飾的名詞the man在定語從句中是動詞served的賓語，因此，關系代詞應該用賓格whom，但在口語中往往用主格who。

　　這里的 it指 a hat，以避免重復。 put on是“戴上”、“穿上”的意思。如果它的賓語是一個名詞，這個名詞可放在 put on之后，也可放在put和on之間。如果是代詞，就必須放在put和on 之間。如：

　　穿上外衣。
　　但只能說：
　　Put it on.

　　定語從句
　　定語從句像形容詞一樣起修飾作用，但位于所修飾的名詞之后。定語從句由關系代詞引導，緊跟在它所修飾的成分后面。關系代詞 who，whom與 that修飾人，which與 that修飾東西。關系代詞指代從句的主語或賓語，同時又充當連接詞，把從句和主句連接起來。請看例句：
